Catholic High returns to the State Chmpionship

Catholic High will return to the promised land for the fourth consecutive time after a distinguished win over No. 1 Brother Martin.

In a rocking stadium against an undefeated opponent, Catholic High gained an early lead through the help of freshman quarterback Daniel Beale and senior running back George Hart III. By the end of the first half, Daniel had one passing touchdown and George had a passing and rushing touchdown.

However, Brother Martin alleviated the deficit at the end of the half and into the third quarter, making it a 3-point game in the Crusaders’ favor. Junior quarterback Garrett Mmahat totaled three touchdowns and two interceptions by the end of the game.

After Brother Martin took the lead in the middle of the third quarter, the Bears buckled in and pressed the gas, never looking back. Catholic High returned with a passing touchdown by sophomore wide receiver Shelton Sampson and a rushing touchdown by senior running back Jackson Guest.

With less than ten minutes in the game, Catholic High had diminished a three-point deficit and went up by double digits.

Brother Martin had no answer to the Bears offensive onslaught and the crippling pass rush on defense. Garrett threw a pick six once the Crusaders returned on offense and the play after fumbled on the drive, about sealing the fate for Brother Martin this season.

Catholic High looks to play No. 3 Byrd at Harry “Rags” Turpin Stadium at Northwestern State University in Natchitoches, Louisiana for the Division 1 state title in two weeks. The Bears will need to clean up their early defensive structure to prevent them from digging a hole that they won’t be able to get out of to be able to return to Baton Rouge with the State Championship trophy.
