College Football Preview: Southern University at Florida A&M (September 21st,2019)

Southern University (1-2) and Florida A&M (1-1) have seen a longstanding rivalry over the years. Both of these HBCUs have teams filled with talent, speed, and a hunger to get another win under their belt. The Jaguars are coming int this game with high energy and plenty of momentum after their 61-0 shut out against Edward Waters which means they will be an even bigger challenge for the Rattlers. They also won this past week against Fort Valley State which was a pick me up after their 62-0 loss against the UCF Knights.

Florida is not taking Southern lightly as this is the game will test just how prepared their team is for the rest of the season. Although the Rattlers were victorious this past week the victory is  out of sight and out of mind as they are focused on the mistakes that need to be improved to be properly prepared for Southern’s seasoned defense and offense. FAMU head coach, Willie Simmons, is someone who is able to truly undestand the depth and ability the Jaguars have as he has competed against them for years. He coached at Alcorn and PVAM before he found himself in Florida and said that Southern has guys similar to those in Florida which are “athletic” and “speedy”. Another worry the Rattlers are facing is their three injured players, which all happen to be offensive starters. This puts them at a disadvantage as they hope others can step up and produce the same results as the starters or they will be in deep waters against this Southern defense. Another weakness Florida must overcome is the penalties they appear to be racking up. They had 14 in the last game alone and this is an aspect of their claim they are looking to clean up before Saturday as it could determine whether they win or lose against a team like the Jaguars.

The Southern University Jaguars had an absolutely electrifying performance last Saturday that left fans wanting more. Their defense was forceful and made Ed Waters feel the pressure as they caused multiple fumbles and gave little opportunity to score. The Jaguars understand and acknowledge that the Rattlers are a better team and more of an equal opponent but are looking to replicate their performance this week. Defense was ready for any slip up as Daniel Edwards was the one to recover Ed Waters fumble in the first half and Jordan Lewis had an unforgettable 95-yard interception return for the Jaguars. Offensively, Devon Benn was a great tool for Southern which isn’t surprising as there were high hopes and expectations of him after his 2018 season. Unlike last game, Ladarius Skelton wasn’t as effective as many had hoped but backup Bubba McDaniel came in ready to play. The Jaguars highlighted their preparation as they felt they had solid, effective practices prior to this match up. They really wanted to give the fans what they were looking for and being in their territory made it that much sweeter. Southern showed their ability to execute and be consistent on the field but the real challenge is to make those two aspects of the game something they are recognized for despite their location or opponent.

Be sure to continue to support your Southern University Jaguars on the road. They will be playing FAMU in Bragg Memoria Stadium at 5pm this Saturday so don’t miss out!
