Derreck Bercier is a 5’10” 210 pound linebacker out of Acadiana High School in Lafayette, Louisiana. He helped his team achieve a 15-0 season last year, winning a Louisiana State Championship in the end. Bercier is great at picking his way through the line to make tackles. His instincts are also impressive as a run defender. He just possesses that ability to chase down plays in pursuit as he is very aggressive. He has been First Team All-State and First Team All-District and is a fourth year Varsity starter at Acadiana. Bercier is also on the track & field team and throws the javelin. He also puts work in in the classroom as he has a 3.8 gpa.

When did you begin playing football and what motivated you to play this sport?
I started playing football when I was seven. My uncle is the reason I started playing. He loved the game and I always stayed around him, so that’s how I got into it.
What activities are you involved in besides sports?
I grew up in the country, so we do things like ride horses and go through the sugar cane fields. I also play video games like Madden and Call of Duty.
How do you prepare for an upcoming game?
I watch film the day before the game. My parents usually bring me a sandwich, and I always talk to them before a game. They’ve always been there for me, especially my mom. She always reads me scriptures and tells me to not get hurt. She eases my mind. I also like to Kevin Gates and similar people to him to get me hype. Music that makes me feel like a soldier that will destroy anything that moves.
What’s your favorite thing about your position?
I love that I am right in the middle of everything and I get to make all of the calls. I also love that I get to hit people!
What are some goals you have for this season?
I want to make First Team All-State and All-District again. I also want to win another ring!
Speaking of winning a ring, how did it feel to win the State Championship last season?
I felt like we deserved it, I was so happy and excited. I did not want to go to sleep as I thought everything was a dream. I thought that if I closed my eyes, I was going to wake up from the dream. It was all just unbelievable.
Would you say that that has been the highlight of your career, or was there another favorite moment?
I would say my favorite moment was at practice while we prepared for the Superdome game. Everyone was getting ready, we played lots of music and laughed a lot. We also ate good! The team was always together.
How do you think coaches and teammates would describe you?
They would say I am funny, I love to clown. I always make sure we do everything the right way when we’re on the field. I always ask a lot of questions, even the dumb ones! They would say I pick up for others when they slack. I just make sure everyone is right.
What has football taught you about life?
It taught me that you will always get bumps and bruises, but you have to keep going. Even though you do things for yourself, there’s a greater chance for you to do things for others as well.
What’s your favorite thing about playing football in Louisiana?
The competition is great, along with the weather. I played football in Georgia, but the guys I went up against weren’t as hard. Out here we’re faster, we talk a lot of trash and clown. Even though we do all of that, we’re all still good friends at the end of the day. It’s a family environment.
What would you tell younger players who want to play high school football one day?
I would tell them to keep grinding and never get discouraged. You might not be able to get what you want at first, but as you keep getting better you’ll reach your goal.
What would you bring to a college team and what are you looking for out of one?
I’d hope to bring perfection. I’d study every little detail to help us win. I want a good education and a chance to make it to the NFL. I just want to learn.
Where do you see yourself in five years?
In five years, I see myself with a wife and my own house. I want to be working daily, whether in be in the NFL or in the workforce.
Three words to describe yourself?
Joker, hardworking and respectful.
What is one thing could you not go a day without?
My family! To know that I will always have my family, even close people who aren’t blood related to me, I can go through anything with them. I can’t go a day without my family.
