Diamond in the Rough: Deshaun Batiste

Deshaun Batiste is a class of 2023 defensive end from John F Kennedy High School in New Orleans, LA. Deshaun stands at 6’3, 220 and is an absolute beast coming off the edge. He showcased the ability to blow by offensive lineman and cause havoc behind the line of scrimmage for QBS and RBs. Deshaun also showed that he can absolutely pummel offensive lineman with his strength, frequently winning matchups and getting pressure on the quarterback. To go with his on the field capabilities, Deshaun has a 4.2 GPA. He is an all around great young man that we should watch for in the class of 2023.

Where did you grow up and how long have you been playing football?

I was born and raised in New Orleans. I’ve been playing football since I was a kid. I love the sport, it’s my happy place.

Who or what motivated you to want to play the game?

My brothers and cousins all played and of course were my biggest motivators. They pushed me and inspired me. I saw them getting their names out there and I wanted to do the same.

At the collegiate level, what can a coach and teammates look forward to getting from you?

They would get someone who makes good grades, works hard, and puts in the effort necessary to get things done. I’m not much of a talker. I execute my assignments, and I like to make sure my teammates are good on and off the field. I’m just an all around leader and I always expect to dominate on the field.”

What players do you watch to try and mirror as much of their technique as you can in order to make yourself better?

The Watt brothers , JJ and TJ, also Aaron Donald. I enjoy watching their techniques, their explosiveness getting off the ball. They are all good at using their weight to get to the QB and they play the run really well. Just the overall dog mentality that they have are all reasons I study those guys.

How would you describe your style of play?

I like to play fast and physical. Whatever way is most effective in getting the job done for that game.

Elaborate on some things you feel you can improve as a football player.

I want to add more weight. I know going to the next level I’ll need to get stronger. Perfecting my technique and exploding off the ball are things I would like to improve about my game.

What personal goals and team goals do you want to have accomplished by the end of this season?

I want to send my seniors out with a bang and make them feel like we had a great year. I want to help out the team win by doing everything that I can. I want to have more offers and more college coaches looking at me. I feel like I’m underrated and I have to complete the mission. Certain schools get a lot more recognition than others and I want to help get that same recognition for my teammates and myself by playing the best I can.

How big of an impact does football have on you?

Football plays a big role in my life. It helps keep my mind off of things and keeps me going.

How do you hope your teammates and coaches remember you once you move on from high school football?

I want them to remember that I gave my all. I left everything I had on the field and I had their backs throughout our entire journey as we fought together.
