Diamond in the Rough: Drew Lege

Drew Lege is a quarterback out of Vermillion Catholic High School in Abbeville, Louisiana. The junior measures at 6’2 205 lbs and epitomizes the definition of an accurate passer. Drew specializes in surveying the field and delivering absolute strikes to his receivers down the field. He displayed the ability to extend plays while keeping his eyes down the field to deliver the ball on the run. Lege finished the season with 2,390 yards passing, a 67.4 completion percentage, 21 touchdowns to just 2 interceptions, and was recognized as an all-district and all-state selection. Off the field, the senior has a 4.0 GPA and a score of 26 on the ACT.

When did you begin playing football and how did you first come to love the game?

My first-year playing was 5th grade. I always watched football and my dad coached at Abbeville. I always went to practices and games and saw the hard work that was put in.

How do you deal with the pressure that comes with being the starting QB and having to take on those leadership responsibilities?

I feel like I’ve always been a leader on and off the field, so I don’t really feel any pressure. I trust in my guys to make plays and I trust in myself to be able to make plays necessary for us to win games.

More guys like Lamar Jackson and Deshaun Watson, dual threat QBs, are starting to emerge at the position? How would you describe your style of play?

I’m definitely a pocket passer. I’m not very fast and I know that, so I don’t do much running. I can escape the pocket if needed but still look to use my arm rather than my legs.

What pocket passers in the NFL do you try to incorporate a part of their skillset into yours and why?

I hate to compare myself to someone as great as Tom Brady but he’s someone I try to model my game after. He sits back in the pocket, has a great arm, and delivers good passes.

What were some of your motivators for coming out and having such a great junior season?

My sophomore season I had a great year. My junior year I wanted to try and take it a step further and lead my team to state. We lost in the semis, so we came up a bit short.

You just received your first offer from Yale. Walk me through how you got the news and how you plan on going forward now that you have your first offer.

Coach Lett contacted me on twitter and said he wanted to talk. I gave him my number, he gave me a call, told me about Yale, and felt that I fit the program, so he offered me. I’m extremely grateful for the Yale offer but I want to continue to get my name out there and hope I get more. I’ll be just as excited as I was getting another one as I was for the Yale offer. From there I’ll evaluate my options and make a decision.

What do you love most about playing the Quarterback position?

I love being a leader. I’ve always done it and people look up to me, so I try to take that out on the field. I like being the guy that helps when my teammates are down, and I feel I’m best fit to carry the team to victory.

What team goals have been set for next season? What are the personal goals you hope to accomplish?

We’re getting a new coach this season and plan on continuing to keep things going. We’ve had great seasons in the past. We want to win district, win all our playoff games, reach state, and hopefully win it all. As for myself, I’m around 4,000 yards away from 10,000 yards passing for my career. Hopefully I can throw for 4,000 yards and reach that mark.

Are there any life lessons that the game of football has taught you that will remain with you forever?

I learned to never give up. We can be down two touchdowns, and anything can still happen in football. If you work hard you can get through tough times in the game of life and football.
