Diamond In the Rough: Jalil Brown

Jalil Brown is an electrifying athlete. Playing quarterback and running back, he has the ability to move the ball down the field. Jalil has good speed, above average lower body strength, and he has great game speed vision with finding holes in the defense. In his game vs Garland, Tx, (where he was named Player of The Week) Jalil scored Touchdown after Touchdown even with 10 defenders trying to bring him down. Last season, in only his Sophomore campaign he carried the rock for 1215 yards averaging 8.1 yards per carry with 7 touchdowns. He also passed for 438 yards with 6 touchdowns. Jalil had 1690 total All-Purpose yards and was named to 10-6A 2nd Team All-District as well as Team MVP in only 8 games in 2019. After speaking to him, Jalil is a soft-spoken young man that has just been accepted into the National Honors Society with a 3.5 GPA.

At what age did you begin playing? I started playing football when I was 4; I played for the North Texas Rams until I was 9.

What did football teach you about life once you started playing it? I have learned to never give up, look forward to the next play, stay in your game, and to not get mad.

Who are your biggest motivators for playing the game? My family, my dad passed away when I was a year old and my grandmother passed away last year. I play the game because I honor my family though this game I love.

Do you play any other sports in high school? I like making plays in Basketball while getting up and down on the court.

How do you think coaches and teammates would describe you as a player? A good teammate, non-selfish, humble, play maker, respectful.

Do you have a favorite college or NFL athlete? Patrick Mahomes, I like the way he plays. He has a strong arm. You can see that in the way he throws the ball. And he has awesome down field vision.

For the upcoming season, what are some goals that you look forward to accomplishing? Breaking the school record, making it to the playoffs, and winning state. Last season I rushed for 1200 yards, this year I want more.

What do you think makes you unique to your position? How strong I am, my balance, my vision, and my ability to make big plays.

What do you think are some of your weaknesses? My speed, however I am training on it right now. I currently run a 4.5 forty.

What is your favorite high school memory so far on the team? My Garland game, it was my birthday and I threw for 375 yards.

What do you do in your off-season? Running and training. I have been training speed and agility, strength and conditioning. Me and my QB coach have been working on my passing accuracy, and my footwork. Coach has me in the sandbox working the ladder and hurdles.

What are some of your hobbies? I like playing basketball and working out.

Do you have any specific personal goals for next season? Making it to the playoffs, then state. I just want the team to get better. We didn’t win a lot last year but we did open up some eyes because of how many points we put up. I am hoping that we are able to continue our improvement as a team this season.

What are some pregame activities that your team does? We listen to music and get mentally ready for battle.

What would you say is the most challenging thing about being a Quarterback? Knowing all the plays and knowing the responsibilities for every person on the offense is the biggest challenge about being a quarterback.

What is something you think people should know about you? I am coachable. I bring my work ethic both on and off the field and I work a lot on my skill set. I am determined; it will take an Army to take me down. I like taking people by surprise; teams underestimate me.
