Diamond in The Rough: Mason Taylor

Mason Taylor is a class of 2022 TE/WR for St.Thomas Aquinas in Ft. Lauderdale, FL. He is 6’4 and weighs 225. Mason has good athleticism for his size and likes to play physical. He has great hands and consistently wins on jump balls, and makes catches in traffic. Something that stands out in his film is his blocking; he does a great job of getting his hands on the defender and driving till the whistle blows. Overall he is a complete player with a rare blend of size, athleticism, strength, physicality, and hands.

How long have you been playing football? I’ve been playing football since 5th grade. My parents didn’t let me play till later on because of all the contact involved.

What is your favorite route to run? My favorite route to run is probably a middle read route because I get to make the decision and read out the field and be creative.

Do you prefer to block or run a route? I really don’t care if I have to block or run a route. I love doing both.

Is there a player you can compare yourself to? I like to compare myself to Travis Kelce. He has a lot of awareness for the game and knows how to create space and get open. I watch his film sometimes to give me some ideas on how to press leverage etc.

Do you have any role models? I wouldn’t really say I have a role model. I try to be the best version of myself as possible.

What kind of routes do you prefer short, intermediate, or deep? I like all routes, but I like intermediate a little more because I can create more space when I am behind linebackers.

Can you play any other positions? I flex out to receiver a lot in the slot and from time to time outside. I also started practicing rush DE for this season.

What stands out about the way you play (speed, toughness, etc.)? Physicality and toughness for sure. I love to get people’s hands off me and keep climbing in the route.

When you line up what goes through your head pre snap? Pre-snap I would look at the coverage such as where are the safeties and how the linebackers are lined up.

What do you enjoy the most about playing TE? I like being able to put my hand in the dirt and blocking, then going out for a route. I love keeping the defenders guessing on a play to play basis.

Why did you choose to play TE? I chose TE because you’re the person defenses are based off and It’s a challenge that I enjoy taking on.

What are you doing to get better? Staying in the weight room and on the field getting bigger and better every day.

Do you have any goals for this season? My goal for this season is to win the state championship. Personally, I’d like to stay healthy of course and have around 50 receptions and at least 7 touchdowns.

Why should any college give you a chance? Colleges should give me a chance because I am a hard worker. I will be the first on the field and last off every day. Some days I’ll get kicked off the school campus for staying too late by the security.
