Diamond In The Rough: Ralph Walker

Ralph Walker is an aggressive 5’10 Cornerback out of Zachary High School in Zachary, Louisiana. Walker is very competitive and is always aiming to perfect his game as he’s grown 2 inches and has gained 25 pounds since his last game in November. At his position, Walker has led his district with the fewest receptions allowed and is great at covering. His work ethic is not only visible on the field, but also in the classroom as Walker has a 3.5 gpa with an ACT score of 21.

At what age did you begin playing football and how did you get into the sport?

I started playing football when I was around four years old. When I moved to Zachary, my dad brought me out to play for the Jr. Broncos.

How do you think coaches and teammates would describe you as a player?

My teammates would describe me as a respectful player. Even though I’m respectful, I still just aim to win every game as I’m very competitive. 

What advice would you give to younger players who want to play high school football one day? 

I would tell younger players to just do it.  it’s the best experience of your life and will be a great High School experience as well. They need to make sure that they really enjoy it and don’t be afraid of upperclassmen. Whenever you go out on the field, just strive to be the best that you can be.

Outside of sports, do you have any hobbies?

Outside of playing sports, I really like to watch sports in general.  I watch football and basketball a lot.  I also like playing video games on my PS4 a lot.  My favorite video game is Madden.

Do you have a favorite NFL athlete?

My favorite NFL athlete is Stephon Gilmore. He’s a cornerback on the New England Patriots. I definitely try to model his playstyle as well.

What do you do in your offseason?

In the offseason I make sure I train.  I work out a lot just to make sure that I’m still in shape for the football season.

Do you have any specific personal goals for next season?

For next season I mainly just want to win a state championship. That’s definitely always a big goal for me and my team. I also personally would like to lead Louisiana in interceptions. Also I want to make all-state.

What are some pregame activities that your team does?

Before the game, we basically just like to get our minds right. We listen to music to get hype. Ee complete all of our stretches to get ready for the game and just focus.

What would you say motivates you the most?

I would say that my family plays a big part in motivating me. My teammates and friends also motivate me a lot and keep me going.

What has football taught you about life?

Football has taught me a lot.  I would say the biggest thing that football has taught me is how to compete for what I want. You have to work hard to get where you want to be, and this sport has really taught me how to go hard if I want to get somewhere.

What’s the most challenging thing about your position?

I would say my position is just for people who love challenges. It’s kind of the loneliest position on the field. Sometimes you have to have a short memory.

How would you describe your style of play?

I would describe my style of play as aggressive.

What are some things you feel you can improve on for the upcoming season?

For this upcoming season I would say that I need to take more chances. In the past,  I wasn’t taking as many chances as I should have.
