Diamond in The Rough: Sam Lopez

Sam Lopez is a class of 2023 offensive lineman for Florida Christian in Miami, FL. He is 5’11, weighs 245 lbs, and sports a 3.2 GPA. Sam is a hard-working versatile player that played varsity as a freshman. The former wrestler is very athletic and fast for a lineman, you can see just how fast he is when he pulls at Guard and when he gets to the next level to make his next block. Sam can play anywhere on the offensive line and also plays on the defensive line. Overall, Sam is an athletic, versatile player with great speed, strength, and work ethic.

How long have you been playing football? Since I was 10.

Do you play any other sports? No, I did wrestling till I was 10 then I switched to football.

Why do you choose to play football? Because kids in school were talking about it and at the time, I was doing wrestling, but I didn’t like it. I wanted to do another contact sport and football came up.

What is your primary position? Offensive Tackle but I can play anywhere on the line.

What is the most important part of playing on the OL? It’s a lot of skill, especially mentally.

What’s the first thing you look at when you line up? The overall defense, the secondary, the linebackers, and where I have to go. 

What side of the line are you more comfortable at? Right.

Where else on the line can you play? I could play everything on the OL but I’m currently at T.

What position do you see yourself playing at the next level? Either center or defensive line because of my height.

What’s the most important part of playing on the OL? Doing your job, there’s nothing better than seeing your teammates score.

Most rewarding part about playing on the OL? Pancakes all day.

Is there a player you can compare yourself to? Quinton Nelson.

What are you doing to get better? Working after practice and going over to D-line coaches.

Do you have any goals for this season? To get better on the defensive line and get more highlights on the defensive line.

What stands out about the way you play? My athletic ability because linemen are not usually athletic, I could pull and go up field real fast.

Why should colleges give you a chance? I got heart for the game, and I always do my job.

What would you consider your biggest strength? Run blocks.
