Jaguars Win Big at Homecoming

Southern University returned to A.W. Mumford Stadium in a homecoming game that would be a great game for the players as well as the fans. The jaguars hosted Arkansas Pine Bluff for this year’s homecoming and played an outstanding game to give southern the 49-17 victory. The southern offence has been improving with every game this season and it has shown again in this game. The defense has also been improving over the past few games which attributes to the point spreads over recent games.

When the game began, the jaguars game out strong and ready to play, and with a few minutes into the game, Lenard Tillery had ran in two runs for touchdowns to give southern an early lead of 14-0. Later Arkansas Pine Bluff had scored a passing touchdown and then towards the end of the first quarter John West of Southern ran in a 6 yard score to put the jaguars up 21-7 at the end of the first.

The second quarter was slow offensively with Arkansas Pine Bluff scoring a field goal, the defense performed well in preventing a touchdown here and preventing other scores in the duration of the game. Halftime was a great show for southern fans as well as the homecoming ceremonies. When the second half began the southern jaguars began to play like the southern team we all have come to know. Howard had completed a touchdown pass to Willie Quinn and the jaguars put the lead even further when Howard made a 14 yard touchdown pass to Brown.

Howard had another great game completing 22 of his 28 passes for 292 yards and 3 touchdowns. This was added to the 515 total yards by southern as well as 33 first downs, which is a season high. Quinn also had a good game 6 receptions for 92 yards and two touchdowns, one of those in the fourth quarter, which helped seal the win for the Jaguars.

This last game gives Southern its fourth straight win and now places them second in the SWAC west conference right below fellow Louisiana team Grambling State. Southern has a good matchup next week as they take on Alcorn State, then return home to Baton Rouge to face Texas Southern.
