The Louisiana College Wildcats will travel to Jackson, Ms this weekend to take on the Belhaven Blazers at 7 pm central time.
This past Sat The Wildcats played DI Stetson University in Deland, Fl. The Cats were able to successfully move the ball and score 13 points against a bigger team, and better funded program. Each of the Cats quarterbacks (Landon Lalonde and Sal Palermo III) found their targets in the end-zone (Zion Williams, Jarred Simpson). Running back Aaron Woods found his stride in the second half of the game and rushed for 50 yards on 12 carries.
Freshman wide receiver Jarrred Simpson had a huge game against the Hatters. He had 3 receptions for 41 yards with a touchdown. This was his first collegiate game. As some will remember, he was a standout receiver back on December 28th last year at the 2018 LGF All-Star Bowl game. After his huge performance in that game, he received an offer to play at Louisiana College. Before the season started had a chance to talk to coach Charles about the Freshman receiver and could not say enough about his development both as a receiver and a young man. In Saturdays loss, Simpson showed his speed and was able to get past defenders on a number of plays which opened up running lanes for Woods.
Keys to the game: The Wildcats need to protect the pocket and give the QB a chance to throw the ball. On defense, the focus on making tackles. The defensive line was able to put pressure on the Stetson Hatters last week but at times failed to close up the gaps.
Overall: This wildcat team is very talented and could push for a conference title. They have some young play makers and as they continue to mature, the sky is the limit with them. Look for the Wildcats to bounce back this week and prove that last week they had first game jitters and a case of awe as they played against a DI program. The score from last weeks game does not do the injustice of the match-up.
PERSONAL RANT: Had it not been for 9 questionable calls, the score would have been much different. I was very surprised that the field judge did not throw out his arm (must have been a college QB), as he was the only person the field that saw penalties against the wildcats that the back judge standing right where the play took place could not see. Then on one instance staid that it was legal for defensive backs could pull jerseys to slow down receivers right in front of me. (Maybe next time I will wear a big sign around my neck to let refs know I am part of the media) The wildcats were penalized 13 times in the game, and many of them came after a 3rd down stop, then a 15 yard penalty to extend the drive.
