Roberts Pleased With Lions’ Progress Through First Week of Camp

HAMMOND, La. – Southeastern Louisiana head coach Ron Roberts has seen his team make strides during the first week of fall camp, which wrapped up on Saturday night in Strawberry Stadium.

The Lions officially opened preseason practice on Tuesday in preparation for the 2017 season, which opens Sept. 2 at UL Lafayette. For 39 members of the Southeastern roster, the past week has served as the introduction to their first fall camp under Roberts.

“We’ve improved each day,” Roberts commented. “Our players have worked extremely hard every day and have come in with the right attitude. One of the things we look to establish our first week is the tempo we want to practice at and everyone has really taken to that well.”

With so many new faces on the roster, Roberts and his staff have concentrated on meshing the incoming talent with a solid veteran corps.

“We know what we have in a lot of our veterans,” Roberts said. “We have a lot of guys back who are solid and do things the right way. But we also have many newcomers and backups we think can compete for jobs and we’ve used this first week to get them up to speed and in a position where we have good competition across the board.”

Roberts indicated the leadership and chemistry he observed from the Lions in the spring has carried over to the fall.

“We’ve seen great leadership across the board,” Roberts said. “The players are doing the little things right and policing themselves, holding themselves and their teammates accountable. I really love the attitude of this football team.”

The Lions took Sunday off and will return to the field on Monday for a 7 p.m. practice in Strawberry Stadium. Week two culminates with the fall’s first scrimmage on Saturday at 7 p.m. in Strawberry Stadium.

In conjunction with the scrimmage, Southeastern Athletics will host the second Kickoff Appreciation event for season ticket holders only from 6:30 p.m. – 7:30 p.m. in the Billups Room.

Fans wishing to purchase season tickets, parking passes or Billups Room passes or join the Touchdown Club will have the opportunity to do so at the event, where refreshments will also be available. For more information on the event or to purchase season tickets, fans can contact the Southeastern Athletics Ticket Office at (985) 549-5466.

“We came a long way in these first five days, but we’re not obviously where we want to be yet,” Roberts said. “This coming week will be a huge week for competition and give our staff a chance to evaluate our guys.”
