Tulane Football Scrimmages Saturday Morning

NEW ORLEANS – Tulane football held a two-hour workout and scrimmage Saturday morning on the Benson Field turf at Yulman Stadium to close out the second week of preseason camp.

The Green Wave once again practiced in full pads with officials from the American Athletic Conference present. Season ticket holders had the opportunity to watch the scrimmage from the Jill H. and Avram A. Glazer Family Club and hear from head coach Willie Fritz as they received a sneak peek at the 2017 edition of the Green Wave and picked up their tickets for the football season.

Fritz was impressed with the performance of junior quarterback Jonathan Banks on Saturday. In the top play of the day, Banks lofted a pass down the sideline into the basket of redshirt freshman Jacob Robertson Jr., who took it to the end zone. Fritz also complimented the play of freshman quarterbacks Khalil McClain and Dane Ledford.

“We saw some good things,” Fritz said of the scrimmage. “Jonathan Banks had a good day today. I thought Khalil McClain showed a lot of stuff. He had poise and he’s a big guy – he’s 225 and he runs fast. For a true freshman, he has a lot of poise. Dane Ledford made a good throw, and he and DJ (Owens) hooked up a few times.”

Saturday’s session included individual position work prior to the scrimmage with special teams practice mixed in. The workout incorporated live tackling, and afforded the defense more work in bringing ball carriers to the ground. The Green Wave emerged from the day healthy, which Fritz stated was the best thing about the scrimmage.

“When you don’t have live (situations), a lot of times the defense thinks they’ve made a tackle and maybe they didn’t really,” Fritz said. “It’s good for the defense to be able to leverage and tackle and get guys to the ground. We’re not going to have very many of these opportunities. I don’t want to go from having good depth to not having depth.”

The Green Wave return to practice Monday after taking off Sunday. Practices are closed to the public.
