UMHB preview

Louisiana College football started the season with a tough road trip to Alcorn State University and will make their final trip of the year to an equally as impressive team, the #2 ranked University of Mary Hardin-Baylor. Kickoff is scheduled for 1 p.m. from Crusader Stadium in Belton, Texas and can be heard live locally on 104.3 FM The Bridge.

LC (4-4, 4-3 ASC) responded well to the disappointment of losing the Border Claw the week prior with a run away 42-7 victory over Belhaven to cap off the 2018 Homecoming celebration. The Wildcats played on a short field the majority of the game thanks to exceptional defense and special teams play, and in the span of four minutes in the second quarter scored three touchdowns to being the rout of the Blazers.

Mason Jordan finished with just 153 passing yards but found Leondre James twice and Zion Williams another time in the end zone for three scores. Aaron Woods and Connor Maples added rushing touchdowns and even the defense got in on the scoring with a pick-6 from Larenz Clark in the fourth quarter. The LC defense held Belhaven to 258 yards of total offense in the game and forced six turnovers with four interceptions.

The Wildcats have done well on the defensive side of the ball allowing 353.0 yards per game the last three weeks and allowing a team to pass for more than 200 yards just once during that time frame. Before last week against Belhaven, the Wildcats had three straight 400 plus yard offensive games and are averaging 353.6 yards per game in conference play this year.

Not since the Alcorn game have the Wildcats faced a defense as solid as the one they will this week at UMHB. The Cru are the best defense in the conference, and it isn’t even close. The defense and special teams units have scored more touchdowns (8) than they have allowed their opponents offense to score (6) this year.

Allowing an average of 5.2 points and 163.0 yards per game while scoring more than 60 points and 500 yards of offense makes it easily understandable why they are one of the best teams in the country again this year.

Senior back Markeith Miller is already over 1,000 yards on the season, the only running back in the ASC, with 17 rushing touchdowns and a 132.0 yard average to his credit. QB Jase Hammack has been efficient with his time completing 62.3 percent of his passes for 1,202 yards and nine scores. Three receivers have more than 20 catches, 250 yards, and two touchdowns on the season to go along with the dominant rushing attack.

“They set the bar in the ASC and in the nation,” Head Coach Justin Charles said. “They’re who you want to play against when you think about playing against the best. Knowing that you have the opportunity to play the best when you want to be the best, this is a chance for us to see what the best is like and be able to compete at that level. When we kick that ball off there isn’t a number in front of their name, it’s Mary Hardin-Baylor and LC between the lines.”

Saturday’s game will be broadcast live on The Bridge 104.3 FM and through the station’s web site beginning with the pre-game show starting at 12:30 p.m. with Doug Gann and Brad Welborn. Live stat and video links are available at www.lcwildcats.net.
