Week 1: Woodlawn falls to U-High 34-14 after delayed start to season

The Woodlawn Panthers dropped their first regular season game last night against cross town foe, University Lab Cubs after a 12-day layoff due to Hurricane Ida shutting down schools and cancelling football games across South Baton Rouge last week, with a score of 34-14 in favor of the home team, University Lab Cubs. University Lab was actually in its second week of regular season play after playing an away game last week against Central (BR). University Lab received the ball first and on their first drive of the game Woodlawn senior safety, Dezaray Delmore picked off a pass giving Woodlawn great field position for they’re opening offensive drive. After being intercepted on his third pass of the game junior quarterback, Rickie Collins then led the Panthers on a 80 yard scoring drive capping it off with a 25 yard touchdown strike to senior wide receiver, Kyle Jones take the early 7-0 lead. University Lab would respond with a touchdown of their own knotting the game at 7 a piece in the first quarter.

The game was starting to look like a defensive slugfest going into the second quarter when Rickie Collins connected with junior running back Jayveon Haynes on a screen pass in which Haynes took the pass from Collins 65 yards to the end zone making it 14-7, Woodlawn. University Lab responded by taking the ensuing kickoff all the way tying the game at 14. The game started to turn in ways that weren’t in favor of the Woodlawn Panthers after the kickoff was taken back for a score. Although the score may not show but this game was not the same as the score depicts. There were some bright spots for the Woodlawn Panthers as junior quarterback Rickie Collins was 17-25 with 235 yards while also accounting for the teams two scores. Senior running back, Amani Givens had 13 carries for 103 yards and junior running back Jayveon Haynes added 5 carries for 71 yards. Here are the highlights:
